Grow A Colony Ant Roles Tier List
S/A/B/C rankings for Workers, Majors, and Drones across colony phases and troop modes.
Every colony in [SKILLS] Grow A Colony runs on three egg lines—Worker, Major, and Drone—commanded through troop modes Follow, Scavenge, and Attack. sebcaddy1 built the loop so Workers feed the nest, Majors and Drones fight bugs and rival colonies, and the queen’s AI executes orders you set. This tier list ranks each role by phase, because a Drone that is C-tier in your first ten minutes can climb to A-tier when colony PvP war starts on a twelve-player server.
Cross-read the eggs and ants guide for hatch mechanics and the egg priority tool to turn tiers into a queue order.
Tier key
| Tier | Summary |
|---|---|
| S | Foundation or win condition for that phase |
| A | Strong; hatch soon after S picks |
| B | Situational—good with a build or map layout |
| C | Deprioritize unless a gate forces it |
Early game (first nest, first food loop)
Goal: positive food, safe dig path, first skill points from 5.2 without starving.
| Role / mode | Tier | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Worker + Scavenge | S | Only reliable food income; every other egg eats this output |
| Worker + Follow | A | Protects gatherers near the queen during first bug wander-ins |
| Major + Follow | B | Cheap defense while Workers still scarce; not a food solution |
| Major + Attack | C | Overkill before you have surplus Workers to replace losses |
| Drone + any | C | Upkeep hurts when hatch slots should be Workers |
Patch 5.3 QOL makes early losses less punishing, but it does not remove the food math. Follow the early game build until your checklist shows stable surplus.
Mid game (map expansion, bug zones, skill branches)
Goal: hold one or two resource lanes while clearing insects tagged in the game—spiders, beetles, wasps, mantises, and other arthropod threats.
| Role / mode | Tier | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Worker + Scavenge | S | Still pays for every Major and Drone you add |
| Major + Attack | S | Opens bug pockets and protects Scavenge corridors |
| Major + Follow | A | Escort queen during deep digs |
| Drone + Attack | A | Burst damage for tougher bugs listed in bugs and bosses |
| Drone + Follow | B | Bodyguard role when Majors are raiding elsewhere |
| Worker + Attack | C | Workers fight poorly; wastes food engine units |
Mid game is where players break colonies by copying PvP ratios too early. Use the economy build until food per minute flattens, then inject Majors per the combat build.
Late game (war prep, boss-adjacent threats, full skill tree)
Goal: survive rival colony hits, retake map nodes, and keep hatching during fights.
| Role / mode | Tier | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Major + Attack | S | Core PvP and bug siege unit |
| Drone + Attack | S | Finishes raids and large insects before counter-hatch |
| Worker + Scavenge | S | War eats ants; food engine must run during combat |
| Worker + Follow | A | Emergency queen peel when flanked |
| Drone + Follow | B | Defensive anchor at nest choke points |
| Major + Scavenge | C | Only if zone is 100% safe—combat stats wasted |
Read war and PvP before shifting everything to Attack. Servers with active rivals should treat Worker Scavenge as S-tier even in “late” war—colonies lose wars when food stops, not when Drones look cool.
Role-by-role deep dive
Workers
Workers are the colony’s payroll department. They gather food, fuel eggs, and keep skill purchases affordable. No Worker stack is “optional” at any tier band—only their mode changes priority. Scavenge is default S; Follow rises when you dig far from storage; Attack is almost always C because it removes economy units from the loop you need to replace combat losses.
Majors
Majors are your line infantry: cheap enough to hatch in numbers, strong enough to hold bug lanes and rival scouts. Attack mode Majors define mid and late tiers. Without them, Drones hatch into empty food reserves and Workers get picked off during Scavenge.
Drones
Drones trade food efficiency for punch. Early C-tier reflects upkeep; late S-tier reflects war and elite bug clears. Do not mass Drones before Majors establish a map buffer—see skills tier list for combat nodes that multiply Drone value.
Mode combinations that look strong but fail
- All Attack, zero Scavenge: wins one fight, loses the next to starvation.
- Drones before Majors: high DPS with no front line—Workers die first.
- Follow on everything: queen is safe, map never grows.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about Grow A Colony on Roblox.
Should I ever hatch Drones in early game?
Usually no. Drones are C-tier until Workers produce steady surplus and at least a few Majors hold nearby bugs. Exception: you need one Drone for a specific quest or gate—then hatch one, not a batch.
What is the best troop mode for Workers?
Scavenge is S-tier in every phase for food. Switch some to Follow only when bugs or rivals threaten gather lanes near the queen.
How many Majors before Drones in mid game?
As a rule, establish enough Attack Majors to hold your richest Scavenge route, then add Drones for high-tier bugs from the bugs tier list. Exact counts depend on your build page.
Do ant roles change after the 5.2 skill tree?
Skills amplify roles but do not replace them. Combat nodes raise Drone and Major tiers; economy nodes keep Worker Scavenge at S-tier longer into late game.
