Getting Started in Grow A Colony

Your first hour as queen — hatch, feed, dig, and survive without wasting eggs.

Getting Started

Welcome to Grow A Colony, a Roblox colony simulator where you are the queen ant — not a single avatar with a sword, but the commander of an expanding AI army. Workers scavenge food, Majors (Soldiers) and Drones (Tanks) hold the line against bugs and rival colonies, and your nest grows through digging and building terrain. Multiplayer servers hold up to 12 players, and colony war / PvP can destroy careless expansions. Update 5.3 improved quality-of-life and fairness for new players; Update 5.2 added the skill tree. This guide walks your first session from spawn to a stable mini-colony ready for deeper systems.

Launch from the official Roblox page and load into a server. You should see your queen near a starter nest area with a handful of systems unlocked gradually. Do not skip the implicit tutorial prompts — they introduce troop orders and food pickups that every later guide assumes you know.

First five minutes: stabilize food

Your colony dies without calories. Before fantasizing about raiding neighbors, assign Workers to gather:

  1. Open troop controls and set early Workers to Scavenge (see Controls for exact buttons).
  2. Follow food icon pickups on the surface — berries, scraps, and map-specific pickups vary by zone.
  3. Watch the colony food meter. If it dips red, pull fighters off aggressive orders until storage refills.
  4. Send Workers to drink water when the game signals thirst — details in Food and Water.

Food stability beats egg spam. Hatching ten Workers into starvation loses more time than patient scouting.

Claim daily reward and free boosts

Grow A Colony includes a daily reward track. Log in, open the reward UI, and claim whatever the current streak offers — often food bundles or small egg bonuses. Pair daily claims with honest progression; there are no verified active promo codes right now, but our Codes hub updates when that changes.

Daily rewards matter most on day one and day two when your manual gathering is slow. Missing a day is not catastrophic, but streaks help you keep pace with veterans on the same server.

Hatch your first egg types

Eggs come in three core roles:

EggRoleDay-one priority
WorkerGathering, building supportHighest — economy first
Major (Soldier)Melee damage vs bugs and antsMedium — 1–2 after food stable
Drone (Tank)Absorb hits for MajorsLow — add before first boss

Deep dive: Eggs and Ants. Early game, aim for three to five Workers before mass Majors. Majors eat food without bringing any back — over-hatching them is the classic beginner trap update 5.3 tries to soften, but discipline still wins.

Dig a safe starter chamber

Even before elaborate bases, carve a small queen room and a storage tunnel. Use dig/build tools explained in Dig and Build:

  • Place the queen off the main surface path.
  • Create one choke tunnel Majors can defend later.
  • Leave space for egg layers and future skill tree bonuses.

Players who build in the open get wiped in PvP or spider events. You do not need a megabase on hour one — one defensive bend in the tunnel is enough.

Learn troop orders early

Three orders define automation:

  • Follow — ants stay near the queen or a rally point.
  • Scavenge — Workers seek food pickups.
  • Attack — fighters engage bugs, creatures, or enemy ants.

Practice toggling orders before entering combat zones. War and PvP expands attack usage; Beat Bugs and Bosses shows when to send Majors vs Drones.

First PvE goals before PvP

Recommended solo-safe milestones:

  1. Stable food plus water loop for five minutes real time.
  2. At least one Major and optionally one Drone hatched.
  3. Clear nearby bugs without queen damage — loot feeds more eggs.
  4. Attempt smaller creature kills before Queen Bee raids.
  5. Open the skill tree (Update 5.2) and spend first points per Skill Tree guide.

Avoid declaring war on player colonies until you read War and PvP. Veterans will punish unsecured tunnels and food-starved armies.

Multiplayer etiquette on 12-player servers

You share the map with up to eleven other queens. Some will trade peace, others raid instantly. Until you have backup Majors:

  • Do not build flush against another active nest.
  • Scout with a Follow Worker before committing Attack orders near foreign flags.
  • Chat truces are informal — assume betrayal in ranked-style mindsets.

Co-op moments exist (joint boss clears), but treat PvP as always possible.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Grow A Colony on Roblox.

What should I do first in Grow A Colony?

Assign Workers to Scavenge, stock food and water, claim your daily reward, then hatch Workers before Majors. Full checklist above in Getting Started — follow Food and Water if you starve.

How many Players can be in one server?

Up to 12 players per server, each running a colony. PvP wars can happen anytime — read War and PvP before raiding neighbors.

Does Update 5.3 help beginners?

Yes. Update 5.3 focused on QOL and fairer progression for new players. Pair it with the skill tree from 5.2 for smoother mid-game.

Are promo codes required to start strong?

No. There are no confirmed active codes — see Codes. Daily rewards and efficient gathering beat fake code strings.

When should I fight other players?

After stable food, defensive digs, and a few Majors or Drones. Jump to War and PvP when ready — not before your first Workers sustain themselves.
