Early Game Build

The early game build is the default layout for new queens in [SKILLS] Grow A Colony on Roblox—sebcaddy1’s colony sim where AI ants gather food, fight insects, and eventually raid rivals. Your first hour should produce positive food, a diggable nest core, and enough Workers on Scavenge that hatching Majors does not stall the colony. Patch 5.3 made new-player fairness gentler, but the math still punishes Drones before Workers stabilize.

Start after skimming Getting Started, then keep the colony checklist open.

Build goals (first session)

  1. Food surplus for five consecutive minutes.
  2. Six to ten Workers on Scavenge before your third Major egg.
  3. One dig layer with storage near hatch chambers.
  4. First S-tier skill picks from the skills tier list—food or hatch speed, not glass combat.
  5. Zero colony war declarations until the early game checklist green-lights map pressure.

Egg priority (early)

Follow the egg priority tool with this ratio template:

Order blockHatch focus
Block 1 (eggs 1–5)Workers only
Block 2 (eggs 6–8)2 Majors, rest Workers
Block 3 (eggs 9–12)Workers until surplus, then 1 Major per 3 Workers
Block 4First Drone only if a quest or bug gate demands burst

Details and exceptions live in the eggs and ants guide. Early build never mass-hatches Drones—see ant roles for C-tier reasoning.

Troop modes

UnitModeWhy
WorkersScavengeSole reliable food engine
Workers (near queen)FollowOnly if bugs path through spawn
MajorsFollow then AttackFollow while escorting dig; Attack for first beetle/spider clear
DronesDo not hatch early

Toggle modes when insects approach Scavenge lanes—pull Majors to Attack between Worker trips, not through the middle of a route.

Dig layout basics

Early digging is defense and logistics, not aesthetics:

  • Storage adjacent to hatch — short Worker paths mean faster food loops.
  • Single choke tunnel — one width-limited entrance delays rival scouts and wandering bugs.
  • Horizontal before vertical — wide shallow nests beat deep shafts without combat support.

Expand only when food surplus holds during expansion—if hatching pauses, stop digging and Scavenge.

Skill tree (first points)

Align with skills tier list S-tier:

  1. Food or carry for Workers.
  2. Hatch speed or egg efficiency.
  3. 5.3 QOL / fairness nodes for new accounts.
  4. Basic Major durability before damage.

Read the skill tree guide for branch names in your client version.

First fights (B-tier bugs only)

Engage small surface insects and lone scouts—tier A in bugs and bosses for training, not spider nests or wasp clusters. Pull fights away from Scavenge Workers. If a Major dies, return to Worker hatching until surplus returns.

What to ignore early

  • Colony PvPwar and PvP is late content; rivals will out-hatch you.
  • Scripts auto-farmScripts skip learning modes; risk account action.
  • Promo codes — check Codes for boosts but do not rely on unverified strings.
  • Economy or combat endgame ratios — graduate to economy build or combat build only after this page’s goals are met.

Graduation criteria

Move off the early build when all are true:

  • Stable food with idle hatch slots sometimes empty.
  • At least one mid-map Scavenge route cleared of B-tier bugs.
  • Six or more Attack Majors without food dipping during reinforcement.
  • First A-tier skill branch unlocked.

Then pick economy if you want scale, combat if your server runs hot PvP.

Session routine

Login: checklist → confirm Scavenge Workers → spend skill points → queue eggs per block table.

Logout: stop hatching Majors if food projects negative; set Follow on queen-adjacent Workers if bugs active; note next dig target.

Early game is boring on purpose—boring colonies survive to mid game. Speed comes from consistent Workers, not early Drones.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Grow A Colony on Roblox.

How many Workers before my first Major?

Aim for at least five Workers on Scavenge before your second Major egg. The early build front-loads food so Majors are reinforcements, not a gamble.

Does update 5.3 change this build?

Yes—QOL and fairness tweaks reduce harsh newbie losses. You still Worker-first; you may reach graduation criteria faster.

When should I start digging aggressively?

After food surplus holds while hatching. Dig one chamber at a time and pause if Worker trips lengthen because paths broke.

Can I skip to combat build as a veteran?

If you know troop modes, you can compress early game—but never skip Worker Scavenge entirely. Food still gates everything in Grow A Colony.
